Welcome to Preston Park Youth Cycling Club’s website:Our club has Club Mark status, the quality assurance standard for community sports clubs and we won the British Cycling Club of the Year Award for 2009 having had the greatest expansion in youth members of all cycle clubs throughout the country. In recent times we were also Club of the Year at the Brighton and Hove City Sports Awards. One of our coaches, Anthony Rogers, was the winner of the 2008 Sussex Coach of the Year award capping a very good year for the club. More recently, in August 2010, member Jack Hoyle, became Under 14 National Track Champion which is a major feat with the strength of youth cycling in the UK. Our club caters for members aged at 8 to 18 years, though we have some older and younger members. We meet between March and October, typically at Preston Park Cycle Track, every Saturday between 10 and 12 AM. The club also meets less often during the winter months. Please check our club calendar to confirm details of our next club session. Membership is FREE when you join British Cycling and club session rates are £2.50 for British Cycling members and £4 for non members. We provide fun, skills and competitive cycling activities with fully qualified coaches at Preston Park Cycle Track and believe that cycling contributes strongly to a sustainable lifestyle. Occasionally the club travels away from Brighton for racing and or family and other events. For these types of events, there may be additional costs. Club rollers for loan

PPYCC has two new sets of rollers for loan to members. If you would like to borrow a set of rollers please let Anthony know by telling him in a short message when you think you would use them. If more than two people are interested we will base the decision on how much you race, how old you are and how long you have been a club member.

If you already have a set of club rollers would you let Anthony know this as we need to add it to our inventory.

Stolen bike recovered

…Hi cycling friends

I wanted to let you know that Georg had his bike found Thursday night in the most amazing set of circumstances. I can’t go into all the details as its now a criminal investigation, but due to the power of the internet and all you people passing on the information I received a series of anonymous phone calls, which, through a number of very strange events led to the bike being found!

The Redbridge Cycle Centre and The Cycle Task Force were amazing.

Georg and I would like to thank you all for helping us and for sending your messages of support.

Lets keep riding and beat the idiots who prey on our bikes.

Noah and Samuel win the Welwyn Youth Omnium

We have received snippets of the results from the Welwyn Youth Omnium one of the calendar’s major races for youth riders and we hope in the future that more of our riders will travel to these events.

Noah Ridgway Brown is the winner of the Youth C [under 12 category]

Samuel Jacques is the winner of the Youth E [under 8 category].

Very well done to Noah and Samuel as this event is on a steeply banked track, which our riders do not often get to practice, and it attracts the best riders from the southern half of the country.

We can also be impressed by the performance of Sussex riders overall in this event as past-member Jack Hoyle won the Youth A Under 16 event and VC Jubilee’s Amy Smith came second in the Youth B Under 14 [unless she is older than we realise in which case the Youth A]. All are Preston Park riders and deserve our admiration for their effort and success.

Preston Park 125th Anniversary event news

125th Anniversary organiser Dave Gerrey says “Could you pass on my thanks to those PPYCC parents that helped out;” this thanks is heartfelt from Dave as with a week to go their were few riders entered and even fewer helpers and he ran the show as a one man band.

It was very pleasing to see many of our newer riders racing and enjoying there moment on the podium, the day was most enjoyable for riders and spectators. We hope that many of these riders will wish to enter more races this year and in the future. Ask a coach if you wish to find out more about the opportunities for youth racing.

Mildenhall Cycling Festival 2012 - August Bank Holiday weekend (25 to 27 August)

Please let us know if you’d like to join us at Mildenhall this year - pitches sell out, so we want to gauge interest / numbers early.

This is a good fun well established cycle festival that we have previously attended with about a 30 strong party; this will be our 7th year of attendance.

The festival offers a variety of road and grass races along with other cycling related attractions. It caters for people of all ages and cycling experience. Don’t worry about booking up for particular events as this can all be done upon arrival at the festival.

The full weekend cost about £30 per family pitch last year and details for this year will soon be published on the event website - if you think you may be interested then please let Alison know soon as this event books out early. Email alison@ppycc.org.uk to let us know you’re wanting to join us.

A quick update on a previous post.

British Schools Cycling Association –Overnight trip 23^rd 24^th June

We only have 4 berths left at the Hostel for this trip. Of course you can still come out on either day and race without booking accomodation at the Hostel but you will need to make your own travel arrangements.

i) BSCA National Hill Climb Championship

23rd June 2012 Petersfield

ii) BSCA National Hard Track Championship

24th June 2012 Portsmouth

Several of our riders enjoyed doing the National Hill Climb on the same course last year and many have ridden the Track at Portsmouth before!

We will travel out to Petersfield early on the Saturday morning to compete in the Hill Climb Championship. On the Saturday afternoon we will go for a road ride, or possibly an off road MTB ride for younger riders. There are great riding opportunities in the area!

On the Sunday morning we will travel the short distance to Portsmouth for the Track Championship.

Children compete in BSCA events representing their school, not their cycle club, but all PPYCC riders will be fully supported by the PPYCC coaches on both days.

The overnight stay is not compulsory – riders can just come out and compete on one or other of the days, or go home in between. Transport arrangements will be made when we have confirmed numbers.

The cost of accommodation will around £10 per person.

There may be some extra costs for food and travel depending on how we get there and what we eat!

2) All riders will need to complete their own entries for the 2 events.

Please take part in the youth racing at next Saturday’s Preston Park 125 year anniversary

Hi, we would like our riders to take part in the youth racing next Saturday as there is no club session. The racing is aimed at novice’s and so you should consider the following questions before deciding to take part. If you are not eligible for the racing I strongly urge you to help the organisers in a day’s racing that will attract some of the best male riders from across the country. Given some sunshine it will be a great, fun day.

Should I race this Saturday at Preston Park?

Q. I’m not sure I’m good enough. A. Then this racing is for you.
Q. I did not enter the Welwyn Omnium in time should I do the race at Preston Park instead? A. No.
Q. I have never raced an organised event at Preston Park before should I join in this Saturday? A. Yes, this is for you.
Q. Should I start racing on Wednesday evenings before entering an event like this? A. Start this Weds and race Saturday, or just start on Saturday - either are fine.
Q. I race regularly at Preston Park, is the Go Ride racing for me? A. Only if you find it difficult to keep up with your race group.
